A Question of Brains: Steps Fundraising at Leicester Tigers

The Kipper’s Knickers and The Bee’s Knees
What did you do last night?  Watch television? Knit?  Indulged in a little Pooktre tree shaping or noodling?  Well, no relaxing hobbies for Linda and Morgan of Morgan Gleave Art & Design, oh no, they were out working really, really hard.

The ‘Working evening’ in question started with Morgan donning his dicky bow and Linda her posh frock, her designer heels and industrial strength underwear (that Gok Wan has a lot to answer for!).

A Question of Brains
Of course the Morgan Gleave Art and Design partners did not dress up to take their invisible dogs for a walk, in fact they forced themselves to go to ‘A Question of Brains’, a corporate dinner at Leicester Tigers in aid of Steps.

Steps
No, silly, of course it was nothing to do with the bubble gum pop group with the ‘interesting’ dances.  This Steps is a Leicestershire based charity working with children with cerebral palsy, Down's syndrome and other motor disorders to enable them to become more physically able and independent.

A subtle hint to click on Steps’ website?  Morgan Gleave Art & Design trying to promote something?  Goodness, no!  How can you think such a thing?

Oh, How Hard They Worked…
The Morgan Gleave Art & Design partners beavered away all evening.  Their perseverance and ability to endure hardship has to be admired.

They suffered the Champagne reception, the sumptuously dressed room and the lovely people.  They put up with the live music of Nick Wallbank of ‘W1’ and Morgan did not spend ages admiring Mr Wallbank’s musical equipment.

Both Morgan Gleave Art & Design partners won tombola prizes including a digital skipping rope.  Although keen to keep fit, both Linda and Morgan have duff knees so no skipping for them.  Poor old sausages.

As for the three-course meal with wine, coffee and chocolate, they both managed to force it down somehow.

Clearly Linda and Morgan were on the best table with the nicest people.  Meeting lovely new people and having interesting conversations did ease the burden somewhat.  Such heroics…

Beautiful Dresses and a Pilchard
Linda admits to ‘quite liking’ a few of the dresses.  Actually, the truth is closer to thoroughly enjoying admiring them all.

There were long dresses and short dresses.  Glitter, sequins, colours and classy black.

One person had an exceptionally beautiful dress.  Linda pointed the dress out to Morgan as the woman turned.  Linda complimented her on her dress whilst looking at her face blankly.  Linda felt sure that she recognised her from somewhere.  A former work colleague?  Someone from a networking event?  A shelf stacker in the village Co-op?  Linda meets so many people it takes quite some time to check her internal face index.

Then the penny dropped.  It was Rosemary Conley CBE, patron of Steps.  No wonder Linda was not rescued from her quandary by a, ‘Hello Linda, how are you?’ followed by a vital clue.

Even Linda should have learnt by now that just because she can see someone on television, it does not mean that that person can see her back and that they actually know each other.

Giggle.  Linda thinks she can run a business.  Giggle. Giggle.

The Celebs
Warning!  Show extreme vigilance!  Imminent name dropping activity in this vicinity!

In addition to Rosemary Conley (bang!) attending in her capacity as Steps’ patron, television presenter Ann Davies (bump!), footballer Alan Birchenall (crash!), cricketer and broadcaster Jonathan Agnew (bump bounce bang), rugby union player and Chief executive of Leicester Tigers Peter Wheeler (Crash – goodness, that was a close one!) and comedian/juggler Michael Goudeau (thud!) contributed to the evening’s fundraising activities.

Fundraising
The purpose of this event was to raise funds, and funds were definitely raised.  Every single penny from the event goes to the Steps charity thanks to business sponsors such as Leicester Tigers, Next PLC, Charles Street Buildings Group, Lionel Heap, Eventologists (great name!) and The Waterford House Partnership among others.

Exactly how much was raised is not clear yet although an interim figure of £64,000 was mentioned and that was way before all the activities had been completed.

Peter Jones Enterprise Academy
Business students from Leicester College’s Peter Jones Enterprise Academy were busy bees.  They were everywhere keeping things going, selling tombola and raffle tickets, handing out drinks, answering questions and much more.

The students were wonderful, so polite, helpful and pleasant.  They offered help with a smile and managed to get the right balance between being business-like but still friendly and approachable.  They were kind too.  Even when Linda launched a vicious attack with clawed fingernails on a young man quietly going about his business selling tombola tickets, he was pleasant and helpful.  (Actually she scratched him accidentally on his arm but it probably hurt him.)

…and Oh, Oh, Oh The Men!
Well the dresses have been mentioned.  What about the men? Black tie.  Dinner Jackets.   Well, perhaps Morgan did not notice them, but Linda certainly did.  A whole room full of James Bond’s.  Sooooo sexy…

Morgan, with his silk dicky bow nonchalantly left undone, was complimented for his cool ‘man about town’ look.  Actually he had tried to tie it properly umpteen times but after saying something to the effect of ‘oh dear this is too much bother’ he gave up.

Finally

Did you attend the ‘A Questions of Brains’ event 2015?  What did you think?  Which was your favourite part?

Morgan Gleave Art & Design’s Secret Business Weapon

Well, actually it’s only a secret if your business is based outside Leicestershire.  If you are based in Leicestershire, you clearly have not been paying attention.  Working hard?  What kind of an excuse is that?

Anyway, Morgan Gleave Art & Design was privileged to be invited by Emma Wennington to design the promotional material for her new and innovative business networking organisation, TBR Networking.

Chocks Away
Chocks, not chocolate.  Honestly, Linda!

Morgan and Linda attended the TBR Networking Launch on Friday 13 November 2015 at St Martin’s House, Leicester.  For a few hours, work consisted of drinking, eating, meeting nice people and getting some useful business tips.  If only that happened every working day…

Far from an unlucky launch date, all went smoothly and everybody appeared to enjoy the experience.  Without doubt many people got a lot out of it.

You Snooze, You Loose
As soon as Morgan started working with Emma and became familiar with her new concept, he was keen to be involved.  It was clear from the start that this was something new and different, and that Morgan Gleave Art & Design would be forgoing an excellent opportunity by not joining.

Networking is not new to Linda and Morgan but there are few differences between the different organisations.  Further, some consider many of the ‘differences’ disadvantages.

Morgan loves going to breakfast meetings because he gets a full English breakfast - cholesterol, waistline, salt – but then has to have a ‘grandad nap’ in the afternoon to recover.  Giggle.

As for the pyramid selling approach to networking where pressure is applied to recruit more and more members - far too stressful for a sensitive little flowers such as the Morgan Gleave Art & Design partners.

Linda and the Round Table
Sorry, that was irresistible…

Linda was lucky enough to be asked by Emma to lead a table and therefore experienced one of the benefits of the new way of networking first hand.

For those of you who were unable to make it, among other differences, the group is mutually supportive and every member who wishes to gets the opportunity to lead a table discussion.

Leading a discussion is not about selling to other members of the group – although that will naturally happen as strong business relationships are forged – but about strengthening each of the businesses within the TBR group.

During this discussion exercise, the object was to be mutually supportive.  The discussion leader is not trying to sell; s/he is asking for help and advice.  The other participants are not trying to sell; they are offering help with no strings attached.

Linda or Morgan?  Morgan or Linda?  There’s only one way to find out!  Fight!
The launch was enormously successful - how could it not be when the model is clearly beneficial to all involved.  Classy too.  We like classy.

Morgan and Linda will be fighting to go to the lunch meetings.  Linda WILL win.  If he’s very lucky indeed, Linda will allow Morgan to take advantage of the free professional portrait included as part of the TBR package.

Someone with the initial M is mumbling in the corner.  Muttley.

All Aboard!
Are you going to be at the first lunch?  If not, why not?  Explain yourself (wo)man!

Disclaimer
Morgan Gleave Art & Design has no interest in TBR other than as a member like any other.   We just know how much Emma has put into this project and how passionate she is about creating a different, more focused system of networking.

If we did not genuinely believe that it is a brilliant idea, we would not have mentioned it.

Bleedin' Graphic Designers...

What Alf Garnet would say about Graphic Designers:
A tribute to Warren Mitchell

"Who does he think he is ponsing about in front of a canvas with a paintbrush in his mouth?  Bleedin’ Michael Angelwatsit?"

"Overpriced graphic-bleedin’-designers.  Spend two minutes moving a few photo’s around on a bloody computer, charge a fortune and spend the rest of the time on the golf course. It's facts, innit?"

"Marketin’.  Mar-kit-in’.  Bleedin’ mindbendin’.  Well, I mean, tryin’ to trick us into spending our hard earned wages on ponsy coffees.  Yer cappy chin nose, yer Americanos.  Tryin’ to sell us all that foreign muck.  What’s wrong with yer traditional English coffee?  We grow the best coffee in the world.  Bleedin’ graphic designers.  Don’t see ‘em using photos of your British coffee farmer, do ya?"

Nothing in the Universe can Stop you from Letting go and Starting Over

Welcome to the new Morgan Gleave Art & Design blog.  This is the first indication you will have that Morgan Gleave Art & Design is about to go through a major overhaul.  Why?  Well, it’s not a secret but please be patient because, as Mary Poppins sang, ‘Let's Start at the Very Beginning, a Very Good Place to Start’…

The Beginning

Recently, Morgan and Linda of Morgan Gleave Art & Design attended the Leicestershire Business Event at the Leicester Tigers Stadium.  It was a large, but not too large, event organised by Fleckney based Hi 2 Events.  There were talks, speed networking, exhibitions and, Linda liked this, lots of free chocolate.  Actually, there were lots of other freebies too but Linda had trouble getting past the chocolate.  Anyway, back to the point, the event was very well organised by Elaine Vandelli and her team so, in addition to the useful content, the event was great fun.

Dogs Welcome?
Linda and Morgan met many new, pleasant and interesting people.  Both learnt a lot and both discovered many services and products of interest. Linda met Andrew Harris from the Fit for Work Team who mix health and networking by organising walks in Bradgate Park.  However, whether or not dogs are welcome remains unclear.

Polka Dots
Emma Wennington of TBR Networking was impossible to miss in her bright red and white polka dot blouse.  Linda and Morgan are looking forward to meeting lots of new people at the TBR Networking launch on Friday and wish Emma all the best with her new venture.

Vegan Makeup and Skincare
Linda especially liked meeting Emma Blessed of Arbonne VeganProducts.  She tried really hard to work out how Arbonne’s wonderful skincare products and makeup could be incorporated into an art and design business.  Linda has not worked that out yet but is working on it.  In the meantime she thinks that it may be necessary for her to buy them for herself…

Marketing Jumpleads
As far as Morgan Gleave Art & Design is concerned, meeting Julia Canham, of Marketing Jumpleads was a turning point.  Marketing Jumpleads is a supported programme of marketing activities enabling small businesses such as Morgan Gleave Art & Design to enter the world of savvy marketing.

When approached, local marketing companies refused to work with Morgan Gleave Art & Design.  Given that they had in house graphic designers they felt that to agree to represent another design company would create a conflict of interest.  This left Linda muddling on alone.

Therefore, Marketing Jumpleads was a wonderful discovery.  It is a system of DIY marketing closely guided by experts.  Crucially, Marketing Jumpleads is happy working with a company offering graphic design.  Perfect.

All the World’s a Circle…
So, here we are back at the beginning discussing the changes to Morgan Gleave Art & Design.

Having started the Marketing Jumplead’s programme it became clear to Linda that a complete overhaul is required.  At present cartoons dominate giving the impression that that is all Morgan can do.  Wrong.  Absolutely, totally and completely wrong.

A New Beginning
This is it! This new blog is the first outward indication of Morgan Gleave Art & Design’s changes.  There will be a new logo and website among other things.

When?
No one is leaking the schedule.

“I love deadlines.  I love the whooshing noise as they go by.”
(Douglas Adams in The Salmon of Doubt)

Rather selfishly, Linda and Morgan want to keep any whooshing noises all to themselves so you will just have to wait and see.

What do you think of the show so far?
Although this is just the beginning, constructive feedback is welcome.
